WHERE WE BELONG

Check out the September/October issue of @mnmomag for “Where We Belong,” a story by @juliepfitzinger about third places—a term coined by urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg to describe the vital yet increasingly fleeting places beyond home and work where people find connection and community.

In Finding Your Third Place: Building Happier Communities and Making Great Friends Along the Way, Dr. Richard Kyte notes that as people stop seeking true community and opt instead to stay home and online, “we’re becoming more stressed and more depressed.”

The solution? Find your third place.

Pfitzinger’s story highlights a few places where you might find yours—including among our little crew of mahjong enthusiasts. (Shout-outs to @amorecoffeewsp, @babbittswinebar, @yogaandapint, and @mudluk_pottery, too!)

We know taking a chance on joining a mahjong crew can feel scary. The game can be intimidating, and showing up on your own and sitting down at a table of strangers is brave as hell.

But it’s worth it. Come see for yourself.

First and foremost: be nice.

Second, when you join a new crew, try to keep pace with the group. It’s okay if you’re still figuring things out—sometimes you have to fake it through a few games before it starts to click. Playing a little faster than you’re used to will ultimately help you improve.

Heads up! If you’re registered for any of our September 14 events, we’re moving from @lakemonsterbrewing to @dangerousman. You should have received an email, but here’s another announcement just in case!

We are SO excited to be at Dangerous Man. They’ve got beer, slushies, THC drinks, mocktails, seltzers—and, for those of you who loved Lake Monster partly because of its proximity to pizza, we’ve got excellent news: Dangerous Man ALSO has @ogzaza_mn for all of your pizza needs.

Same date. Same time. Same mahjong. New location. See you there!

When you head to the @mnstatefair this year, make sure you stop by the Crop Art exhibit! Our very own loon, @borchersra, created this masterpiece. We may be a bit biased, but we think it deserves a blue ribbon.

Today, @lakemonsterbrewing announced that they’ll be closing their doors this weekend. We are bummed.

When we first started this little Club, we basically officed there. We’ve held meetings there, taught classes there, and hosted events there. The drinks are good and cold, the staff is awesome, and the vibes are always right on point. Lake Monster will be deeply missed, but we’re incredibly grateful for all the time we got to spend there.

For our September 14 ticket holders: we’ll announce a new venue tomorrow, and your tickets will transfer automatically. If the new location doesn’t work for you, just get in touch.

Before leagues, we offer an optional League Prep session to help calm those first-league nerves. And when we say optional, we mean completely, 100% optional. But if the thought of league has you feeling a little panicked, it tends to help.

We’ll eat pastries, drink drinks, walk through how league works, review the rules and scoring, and answer all of your questions. Then we’ll spend the rest of the session playing mahjong. Join us if you’d like.

Your 2025 Card may be retired from your table, but it still has plenty of mahjong left in it.

We are helping to collect Cards and gently used mahjong equipment for incarcerated people who want to learn to play. If you have a 2025 Card, tiles, racks, mats, or other supplies you’d like to donate, send us a message. Have questions? Just ask. We’ll know or connect you with the Saint City Mahjong Club member coordinating the effort.

Everyone deserves opportunities to learn, connect, and experience this game. We all fly better when we flock together.

One of the best things about mahjong is its intentionality.

You choose to sit down at a table together. You put away your phone. You look each other in the eye. And, for a little while, you’re simply there, with nowhere else to be.

When you get to share that kind of connection with your kid, your grandkid, your parent, or your grandparent, it’s even more meaningful.

Learn mahjong with your family. You won’t regret it.

There are 4 ways to stop someone from calling the last discard. The simplest one? Rack your tile. Then take all of the time in the world.
