Let’s talk about the Charleston! How do you do it?

First Charleston (you must do it!) R-O-L

1️⃣ Pass 3 tiles to the player on your RIGHT (R).

2️⃣ Pass 3 tiles to the player OPPOSITE you (O).

3️⃣ Pass 3 tiles to the LEFT (L).

➡️ This completes the first Charleston.

Second Charleston (optional, takes only one player to say “no” to a second Charleston, but must complete all passes if you do it). L-O-R

1️⃣ Pass 3 to the LEFT (L). Not an NMJL rule but you can stack your tiles in a little pyramid (two tiles with one tile on top) to signify the start of the second Charleston.

2️⃣ Pass 3 OPPOSITE (O.

3️⃣ Pass 3 to the Right (R).

➡️ This completes the second Charleston.

Courtesy Pass (optional)
After the Charleston(first if someone stops the Charleston or second if a second Charleston is completed) players may agree to a “courtesy pass”, where O, 1, 2 or 3 tiles are exchanged with the player opposite.

This pass is completely optional and must be mutually agreed upon. The lower number of tiles a player wants to pass is what must be passed (you can see in the video two players passed two tiles and the other two players passed three tiles).

East then discards the first tile to start the game!

How do I set up a game of American Mahjong?

1. Build the Wall
•Each player builds a wall two tiles high and 19 tiles long in front of their racks

2. Roll for East
•Each player rolls two dice. The highest roll becomes East (dealer in name only).
•The player to East’s right will become East for the next game. The “East” designation continues to move to the player to the right for each new game.

3. Break the Wall
•East rolls two dice again to determine where to break the wall.
•Using their own wall and counting to their left, East counts that number of stacks (in the video East rolled a 9) and, using the pusher on their rack, breaks the wall there.
•This is the starting point for the deal.
• The remaining tiles makeup the final wall from which players will draw tiles.

4. Deal the Tiles
•East begins by taking 4 tiles (two stacks). The player to East’s right then takes 4 tiles (two stacks) and this continues for three rounds—until each player has 12 tiles.
•When East’s wall has been depleted, the player to the LEFT pushes out their wall. Remember Play to the Right, Walls to the Left.
• After each player has 12 tiles, East then takes the top first and third tile (14 tiles total). Each player starting with the player to East’s right then takes a single tile-the other three players will have 13 tiles total.
•Tiles are kept face-down until everyone has the correct number of tiles. Then and only then may you look at your tiles.

5. Rack Your Tiles
•After everyone has the correct number of tiles, each player places their tiles on their rack, arranging them in a way that makes it easier to organize a potential hand.

You are now ready to start the Charleston!

"Mahjong" literally means "sparrow" in some Southern Chinese dialects--a nod to the click-clack of the tiles, which sounds like sparrows chattering.

That's why you'll spot birds all over the game--like the One Bam Bird, the real MVP of the tile world. In modern sets, you will often find that the One Bam tile depicts various beautiful birds, such as a peacock, flamingo, or sparrow.
